Dr. Willie R.
Mazyck Sr.
Feb 28, 1946 — Jan 1, 2025
Dr. Willie Rufus Mazyck Sr., referred to as "Dr. Mazyck'', "Doc", "Mazyck", "Willie", and "Bill", was born on February 28, 1946, to the late John R. and Maria S. Mazyck in Holly Hill, South Carolina. He departed this life on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in Dallas, Georgia. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at 12 noon at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Bill attended the public schools of Orangeburg County School District 3 in Holly Hill, (the biggest little town in South Carolina). In 1963, he graduated from Roberts High School (now Lake Marion High School and Technology Center) and enrolled at Benedict College, Columbia SC, to pursue a double major in Biology and Math. While at Benedict, he became an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Business Manager for the Student Newspaper, as well as a member of the Student National Education Association. Bill graduated from Benedict College in 1967 and began his teaching career in science at Lyons Industrial High School, Lyons, GA. The following year, he transferred to Camilla Consolidated High School, Camilla, GA, to fulfill his dream of coaching football. This move was short-lived; however, as he was drafted into the U.S. Army after teaching and coaching for only four months. During his active duty in the military, Bill faithfully served in an Infantry Unit that led him to a Vietnam tour, which proved to be one of the most challenging of all his life experiences. After three years of active military duty, he returned home and enrolled at South Carolina State College; where he earned a Master's Degree in Education, with certification in School Counseling, School Administration and Science - all while teaching science at Westside High School in Augusta, GA. In 1976, Bill was promoted to Science and Health Coordinator of Richmond County Schools. It was during this time that he enrolled in an Education Administration Leadership Program at NOVA University to pursue a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision. In 1982, upon completion of the Leadership Program at NOVA, he was offered a position as Principal of A.R. Johnson Health, Science and Engineering Magnet School. Four years later, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Personnel; and finally in 1986, he was again promoted to Associate Superintendent of Administration for Richmond County Schools - where he served until his retirement in 1998. Retirement did not end Bill's dedication to education. He continued working with the Augusta Partnership for Children - whose mission was to develop and sustain partnerships in the CSRA that provided services to improve the lives of children and their families, in addition to serving as an Adjunct Professor at the Aiken Campus of the University of SC. Bill had many passions and hobbies that defined him beyond his professional career. He was an avid traveler; with the goal of visiting every state in the country - a goal he almost achieved before his health began to decline. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, and gardening. What brought him the most joy, however, was telling jokes and spending time with his family. His laughter and jokes would light up a room; bringing much joy to family gatherings. In addition to his parents, John and Maria Mazyck of Holly Hill, SC, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Millicent W. Mazyck of Augusta, GA; two sisters: Margaret M. Addison of Holly Hill SC, and Elouise M. Jamison-Felder of Orangeburg, SC; and one brother-in-law, Moncks Corner, SC. Survived by two sons: Rufus Orenthal Mazyck of Atlanta GA, and Willie Rufus Mazyck, Jr. (Jasmine) of Powder Springs, GA; Bill is also survived by four grandchildren: Anderson Mazyck of Atlanta, GA; William Mazyck, Kendall Mazyck, and Kennedy Mazyck, of Powder Springs, GA; and five sisters: Mrs. Doretha M. Shepard and Mrs. Henrietta M. James of Holly Hill, SC.; Mrs. Patricia M. Johnson (Jack) of Cheraw, SC; Dr. Maria M. Brown (James) of Evans, GA; Dr. Mildred M. Mazyck, Jr. (Gloria) of Orangeburg, SC; one sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
