Obituary

On April 29, 1943, Brother James Butler, Jr. was born in Waynesboro, GA, to James Butler, Sr. and Catherine (Smith) Butler. Over the course of his life, he was blessed with the love of three wives: the late Leomie Fielding, the late Dorothy Singleton, and his wife, Brenda Johnson. Through these unions, James was honored to raise a large, blended, and deeply loving family. Surrounded by his loving family, James peacefully passed away on the evening of June 9, 2025. James received his early education in Georgia and completed part of high school. However, driven by a sense of responsibility to support his family, he entered the workforce at a young age—taking on various jobs, including picking cotton, to help make ends meet. In the 1960s, James and his family relocated to Boston, MA, where he pursued a career in carpentry and joined the Carpenters Local Union 67 and was blessed to retire at the age 55. Known for his compassionate heart, James quickly earned a reputation for his generosity and eagerness to help others. Often, he offered his superb carpentry skills to friends, neighbors, and members of his congregation—frequently accepting only a modest payment or a warm meal in kind. James made the profound decision to dedicate his life to God. He became a passionate student and teacher of the Bible, encouraging not only his children but anyone he met to seek knowledge, pursue education, and build a relationship with their Creator. Most recently, he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, a milestone he deeply cherished. James is predeceased by his parents; his siblings, Laura "B" Ashley, Clevester Butler, Willis Butler, Bennie Butler, and Rickey Courtney; his beloved son, Donnie Butler; and three cherished great-grandsons, Frederick Kelly, Jr., Ja'Ahvani Butler and Justus Hyman. Leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and resilience, James is survived by his wife, Brenda Butler of Stratford, CT; sons, Jerron (Renee) Butler of Boston, MA, Rodney (Wanda) Butler and James (Consquella) Butler III, both of Augusta, GA; daughter, Monique Butler-Striggles of Boston, MA; his children through loving unions: son, Gary (Michelle) Singleton of Frederick, MD; daughters, Robin Mincey Drayton of Augusta, GA, Felecia Griffin of Savannah, GA, and Jacquelyn (Tony) Singleton of Augusta, GA; his brother, Henry "Bobby" Butler of Evans, GA; his sisters, Clara Mahomes of Villa Rica, GA and Catherine Drakes of Taunton, MA; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. Brother James Butler, Jr. will be lovingly remembered for his charismatic and generous spirit, unwavering faith, and the unconditional love he shared for his family, friends, and community.
