Petty Officer 2Nd Class Gregory Scott
Runnels
May 6, 1971 — Mar 2, 2025
Petty Officer 2nd Class (Ret.) Gregory Scott Runnels passed away on March 2, 2025, at his residence. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at 2 p. m. at B. A. Williams Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at Bellevue Memorial Garden. While he had been in and out of the hospital the last several weeks, the family is deeply saddened and shocked by his sudden death. Greg was born in FT Meade, Maryland on May 6, 1971, and as the son of a Marine, grew up in various parts of the world and in different states in the country, with the one constant in his life being his parents and his siblings. After graduation from Hephzibah High School in Augusta Georgia, Greg joined the Navy where he was stationed on the USS John C. Stennis and like his father before him, got to see the world. His world travels came to a halt upon meeting his lovely wife, the former Alicia Davis, in a McDonalds parking lot on Jun 1, 1999. Upon meeting her, he knew he would never leave her side. They were married in 2001 and soon thereafter he joined the reserves as neither of them wanted to leave California. They were inseparable in every phase of their lives, even taking positions as the same prison to minimize the time away from each other. He became an instant father to Alicia's four-year-old twins, Richard and Lauren, teaching Richard the ins and outs of football on his way to becoming the starting quarterback for his high school team, teaching Lauren how to ride a bike and spending hours watching Steelers football together, but when Ashlynn came along in 2005, she was the unquestioned apple of his eye. He and Ashlynn were a pair and did everything together, and they had an extraordinarily close bond, not the normal father/daughter bond, but something akin to the closest of friends. They were fortunate enough to talk to each other minutes before he passed. Greg is survived by his wife, Alicia Runnels; his children, Richard, Lauren and Ashlynn; his mother, Belinda, his father Bill, his siblings, Eric, Dee, Wendell and Michael, many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and dear friends. Mr. Runnels may be viewed on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to Ashlynn's college fund at https://gofund.me/7c2b18d6 Greg will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will always be cherished.
